Hemanth Jagannathan is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Director, serving as the technical executive responsible for IBM's Silicon Fab Research, Development, Operations, and Infrastructure organization in Albany, New York. He leads a multidisciplinary organization spanning semiconductor process technology research and development, tooling and engineering, 300mm fab operations, and digital infrastructure, enabling the advancement of next-generation semiconductor technologies and systems.
Hemanth earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and began his career at IBM developing groundbreaking high-k metal gate technologies, delivering foundational innovations in gate stack materials and processes that continue to underpin today's most advanced CMOS logic technologies. Over the course of his career, he has led multiple generations of semiconductor technology development, defining IBM's end-to-end process strategy for advanced logic nodes and driving innovations across successive device architectures including planar CMOS, FinFET, nanosheet, and beyond-nanosheet technologies. As a hardware technologist, he played a pivotal role in the development and demonstration of IBM's pioneering Vertical Transport Field-Effect Transistor (VTFET) technology.
Prior to his current role, Hemanth founded and led IBM's Semiconductor Acceleration for Quantum (SA4Q) initiative, forging a close partnership between IBM Semiconductors and IBM Quantum to apply advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies and capabilities toward accelerating the development of next-generation quantum computing hardware. He also led IBM Research's Chiplet and Advanced Packaging Technology mission, driving innovations in heterogeneous integration and advanced packaging solutions for emerging AI and high-performance computing systems.
Beyond technology leadership, Hemanth is deeply committed to developing the next generation of engineers, scientists, and technical leaders. He mentors talent across IBM and actively engages with universities and research institutions nationwide. He currently serves as Executive Director of the SUNY-IBM Artificial Intelligence Collaborative Research Alliance, guiding collaborative research programs spanning AI hardware, algorithms, software, and applications.
A Senior Member of IEEE, Hemanth serves on the boards and advisory councils of several academic and technical organizations. His contributions have been recognized through multiple IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards and IBM Research Division Awards, as well as his appointment as an IBM Distinguished Engineer, one of IBM's highest technical leadership honors. He has authored or co-authored more than 115 technical publications and holds over 230 U.S. and international patents.
