Illumination is critical to image formation since what is imaged is not the object per se but the light that it reflects, transmits, or scatters. This light depends both on the object and the manner in which it is illuminated. The fundamentals of this topic are discussed, as is the design of illumination. An example is illumination for the purpose of enhancing certain features and suppressing others.
