In the search for efficient, stable blue-light emitting materials, polymeric derivatives of fluorene provide an interesting alternative. Copolymers of 9,9-di-n-hexylfluorene were catalyzed with a variety of comonomers by the transition metal catalyzed polymerization of aryl halides. The yields and molecular weights of the copolymers are excellent, as well as their solubility and processability. The thermal and oxidative stability of the copolymers are also excellent. The polymer properties and electronic characteristics can be changed depending on the structure and composition of the copolymers.
