The interaction between two planar electrical double layers is calculated using a recently developed extension of the Ornstein-Zernike relation in which the two surfaces are treated as a single "dumbbel". No superposition of isolated double layers is assumed. In contrast to many earlier theories, the force is not a monotonic function of separation but oscillates and can be either repulsive or attractive. This is qualitatively similar to recent experimental results. © 1986.
