Role of exchange break layer and soft underlayer in multilayer perpendicular recording system

Role of exchange break layer (EBL) and soft underlayer (SUL) in multilayer perpendicular recording system were investigated. Magnetic contrast was obtained on magnetic layers on EBL with and without SUL in the as-deposit state. It was found that the writing happened at the leading edge of the trailing pole when SUL was 0 and 50 nm.
