The authors have designed and tested a cryogenic vessel for a superconducting coil that can be moved within an ultra-high vacuum chamber. The reason for using a removable magnet is to allow lateral access to a given sample and its support. The particular configuration and specifications of the present system when used with a low temperature scanning tunnelling microscope are described. © 1993.
