Relation between dynamical processes at surfaces and electron-energy-loss measurements

The surface response function d() (the frequency-dependent centroid of the induced charge density) determines the influence of a metal surface on all dynamical processes occurring well outside of it. It is shown that this function can be measured directly by use of electron-energy-loss spectroscopy. © 1983 The American Physical Society.
