Summary form only given, as follows. Optical storage is a rapidly developing field which offers the potential for data storage densities well beyond the current capabilities of magnetic storage. Recent developments in the design and optimization of optical storage systems and media are discussed, and a comparison with future improvements in magnetic disk storage is made.
