The coherent transient techniques of optical nutation and free induction decay have been extended, making possible the study of previously inaccessible systems. Coherent transient signals have been observed for the duryl radical in a durene host crystal at 2 K; optical nutation signals using Stark switching and free induction decay signals using laser frequency switching yielded T1 = 530 ns, and T2 = 212 ns. © 1979.
