Integrated circuit techniques have been used to make accurate, multicathode electron sources for use in a high-resolution multibeam CRT. The device features 16 photolithographically patterned oxide cathodes, a common grid, and an integral heater on a 3. 8-mm-square sapphire chip. The electron sources have adequate saturation currents and precise, low cutoff voltages. A demountable vacuum system and an emission microscope that can image cathodes on the screen of a CRT were constructed to examine the chip during operation.
