Metals with closed orbits typically show a nonsaturating magnetoresistance. It is now well understood that macroscopic spatial inhomogeneities can cause this behaviour. The spatial variations about point defects resemble those caused by macroscopic inhomogeneities in several ways. It is shown, however, that point defects cannot cause the observed lack of saturation.
