Experimental evidence for nonradiative resonant energy transfer between Eu3+ and other trivalent rare-earth ions in Y2O 3 is presented and possible interaction mechanisms are examined. It is concluded that coupling via overlap of near zone quadrupolar fields is important. Measurements on the transient behavior of the Eu3+ fluorescence are also discussed.
