This article will discuss electron scattering and the Bohr model of atomic structure in order to illustrate the very high speed with which electrons in an incident beam move relative to valence electrons bound in atoms and molecules. This is followed by the very useful concepts of tracks and spurs, and linear energy transfer all of which are used to obtain an understanding for the spatial distribution of energy dissipation in a solid. Further on we will introduce basic parameters used to describe electron beams and then provide useful relations that govern line speed, beam power, absorbed dose, and yields of chemical reactions.
