In this paper we consider the problem of dynamically assigning addresses to stations attached to a broadcast network. We present a distributed protocol which guarantees that a new station will eventually be assigned an address if one is free, and furthermore, that no two stations on the network will have the same address. We show how the protocol can be simplified in certain specific environments. Copyright © 1986 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Inc.
