The authors report the first measurements of the nonlinear hyperpolarizability, phase-matching behavior, and effective bulk nonlinearity of a promising new organic nonlinear material, 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-acetamidonitrobenzene (DAN). High-quality angular phase-matching curves for type I doubling of 1. 06- mu m radiation were obtained for thin-film crystalline samples grown between glass slides. To produce crystals with a well-defined optical surface and explore possible waveguide applications, the authors attempted to grow DAN crystals from the melt in the 15- mu m gap between two glass microscope slides. By using a single small seed crystallite and slowly cooling the sample below the 163. 5 degree C melting point, homogeneous crystalline films were prepared. The orientation of the optic axis and optic plane in these thin-film samples was the same as for the solution-grown crystals. The transmission spectrum of the 15- mu m thick film was measured, and phase-matching data were obtained.
