Cryogenic frequency domain optical memories based upon photochemical hole burning offer the possibility of storing data at densities of up to 1011 bits /cm2. The basic principles of photochemical hole burning are reviewed. Recent results on recording materials, data reading and writing, and configurations are presented. © 1982 SPIE.
