We have used polyamic acid, the precursor to polyimide, as the protonation source for polyaniline. The acid-base interactions between the acid groups of polyamic acid and the amine groups of polyaniline also provide the driving force for molecular miscibility between the two polymers. This miscibility is retained as demonstrated by wide-angle x-ray scattering, even after the acid-base interactions are removed by way of imidization. Thus, one finally obtains a frustrated blend unable to phase-separate in the glassy state.
